When it wins

The default. Any size aircraft, customs on the field, and more aircraft based on the field than the other two. It wins for groups, for anything larger than a light jet, for an international return, and for anyone staying downtown or east of the river.

FBO: Two FBOs on the general aviation side, away from the airline terminal. Expect a lounge, a car pulled up beside the aircraft, and a short drive around the field from the passenger terminal roads. Airline traffic means a few minutes of waiting for a takeoff slot in the morning push.

Ground travel: Downtown about 15 minutes. Brentwood about 20 to 25 minutes. Belle Meade about 25 minutes. Franklin about 35 to 40 minutes.

When it wins

The quieter option on the west side. It wins for Belle Meade, West Meade and Bellevue, for a light jet or turboprop with up to six or seven people, and for anyone who wants to park, walk through a small terminal and board. Its runway is about 5,500 feet, so a midsize jet needs a lighter fuel load and larger aircraft go to BNA.

FBO: One small terminal with a lounge and a ramp you can see from the parking lot. No airline traffic and no lines. Ramp and hangar space are tighter than at BNA, so on a busy weekend the aircraft sometimes repositions to BNA overnight.

Ground travel: Belle Meade about 15 minutes. Downtown about 15 minutes. Brentwood about 25 to 35 minutes. Franklin about 40 minutes.

MQY · Smyrna

When it wins

The southeast option. It wins for Murfreesboro, La Vergne and the Rutherford County side of Brentwood, and for a larger aircraft when BNA is busy. Its 8,000 foot runway can support many aircraft, subject to aircraft performance review, and several charter operators keep aircraft on the field, so a Smyrna departure sometimes skips a positioning leg.

FBO: One full service FBO with a lounge and easy parking. It is a working field with flight training and maintenance shops around it, so it is not quiet, but you are never waiting behind an airline departure.

Ground travel: Murfreesboro about 15 minutes. Brentwood about 25 to 35 minutes. Franklin about 35 to 40 minutes by the 840 bypass. Downtown about 35 minutes.

The season

When Nashville is busy, and what it does to price.

Nashville flies year round, and the flow is outbound: to the beach and the coast, to New York and Dallas for work. The peak weeks are Thanksgiving week, Christmas week through New Year's Day, the spring break weeks in March, Memorial Day weekend, the week of July 4 and Labor Day weekend. Inbound, CMA Fest in early June and New Year's Eve fill the ramp. In a peak week the light jets based in Nashville are spoken for days ahead, so a quote may carry a positioning leg from Atlanta, Louisville or Memphis and the price sits in the upper half of the range. A flexible date, even by one day, usually brings it back down.

What fits the runway and the mission.

BNA's 11,000 foot runway and MQY's 8,000 feet support many aircraft sizes, subject to aircraft performance review. JWN's 5,500 feet is turboprop and light jet ground; a midsize jet can use it with a lighter fuel load. On the mission side, the Florida and Gulf coasts are light jet legs of about an hour to two hours, and a turboprop covers Destin in about an hour and a half for four people and beach bags. Atlanta is under an hour in a jet and about an hour in a turboprop. New York, Dallas and Chicago fit a light or midsize jet. The Rockies and the West Coast call for a super midsize jet, especially in winter, when the climb performance and the range both matter.

Local notes

Details to plan before you fly.

  • Belle Meade, West Meade and Bellevue are closer to JWN than to BNA. For those clients the small airport saves time on both ends of the trip.
  • BNA's morning airline push runs from about 6 to 8. A 7 am private departure can wait a few minutes for release; leave at 8:30 and you usually roll straight out.
  • JWN sits beside the Cumberland River and can be fogged in on a fall morning after BNA is already clear. When the forecast says fog, we plan BNA or a later departure.
  • Summer afternoons bring pop up thunderstorms across Tennessee and north Florida. A morning departure to the coast keeps you ahead of them.
  • A few days each winter bring ice, and Nashville stops on ice more than on snow. We watch the forecast and move the departure by a few hours when it helps.
  • Customs is at BNA only. An international return lands at BNA even if you left from JWN or Smyrna.
  • On a busy weekend the light jet you want may come from Atlanta or Louisville. Your emailed planning estimate allows for that positioning, and the quote shows it.

BNA unless there is a reason not to. JWN wins for the west side of town on a light jet or turboprop. Smyrna wins for the southeast and for a larger aircraft that is already based there. Tell us where you are starting from and we pick the field with you.

How much does it cost to fly private from Nashville?
