Naples is a season market with one close in airport and a ramp that fills on the holiday weeks. Here is what a pilot who works it would tell you before you book: which airport, when to book, and what fits.

When it wins

The airport for Naples, nearly every time. It wins on drive time to everywhere clients stay, it has customs on the field, and its main runway of about 6,600 feet handles light through super midsize jets every day and many heavy jets too. It loses only to RSW for the largest aircraft with full fuel on a hot day, for a late night arrival, and when weather closes the field.

FBO: The airport authority runs the general aviation terminal itself: a lounge, a car brought to the aircraft, customs on the field. In season the ramp is full and parking on the holiday weeks is by reservation, so the aircraft may drop you and reposition to Fort Myers for the night. The airport asks jets to avoid arriving or departing between 10 pm and 7 am. It is voluntary, and the operators we work with plan around it.

Ground travel: Old Naples about 10 minutes. Port Royal about 15 minutes. Pelican Bay about 15 minutes. Bonita Springs about 25 minutes. Marco Island about 40 minutes.

When it wins

Fort Myers. It wins for a heavy jet arriving with full fuel on a hot day, for an arrival after 10 pm, as the weather alternate for APF, and when the Naples ramp is full on a holiday week and the aircraft needs to stay overnight nearby.

FBO: One FBO on the field, with customs. It is an airline airport, so expect a longer taxi, a few minutes of sequencing on arrival and departure, and a bigger terminal than you need.

Ground travel: Old Naples about 45 minutes by Interstate 75. Pelican Bay about 35 to 40 minutes. Marco Island about an hour.

When it wins

It wins for a Marco Island stay on a turboprop or light jet. The runway is about 5,000 feet, so it is not a midsize or larger field, and there is no customs. On a light jet it saves the 40 minute drive down from Naples.

FBO: A small county run terminal with a lounge and a ramp that rarely feels busy. Cars meet the aircraft. Fuel is available; hangar space is limited.

Ground travel: Marco Island about 15 minutes. Old Naples about 25 to 35 minutes.

The season

When Naples is busy, and what it does to price.

Season runs from November through April. The weeks that fill first are Thanksgiving, Christmas through New Year's Day, Presidents Day weekend, the spring break weeks in March and Easter weekend. In those weeks aircraft sell out early, ramp parking at APF is by reservation, and prices sit in the upper half of the range. Southbound is tight in November and December; northbound is tight in April, when the winter residents go home. From May through October the market is quiet: aircraft are easier to find, prices sit lower in the range, and empty legs appear as owners reposition.

What fits the runway and the mission.

APF's main runway is about 6,600 feet. Light, midsize and super midsize jets use it all day, and so do many heavy jets. On a hot day with full fuel for a long leg, some heavy aircraft take RSW's 12,000 feet instead, and older, louder Stage 2 jets are not allowed at APF at all. Nashville and Atlanta to Naples are light jet legs of about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half. Chicago, New York and Boston are two to two and a half hour legs where a midsize or super midsize jet fits, and a heavy jet makes sense for a full cabin with a season's worth of bags.

Local notes

Details to plan before you fly.

  • Plan a late arrival for RSW. APF's quiet hours start at 10 pm, and the operators we work with honor them, so a flight that will land after 10 goes to Fort Myers and a car.
  • On Christmas week the APF ramp is reserved weeks ahead. The aircraft often drops you and repositions to Fort Myers or Punta Gorda for the night, and that positioning is in your quote, not a surprise.
  • Presidents Day weekend and Easter run in reverse: everyone leaves on Sunday afternoon. Book the Sunday departure first and the Thursday arrival second.
  • Customs at APF keeps set hours. A Bahamas or Caribbean return that lands late clears at RSW instead, and we plan it that way from the start.
  • In summer the sea breeze builds storms over the coast by early afternoon. A morning departure is the smoother one.
  • For a Marco Island stay on a light jet, MKY saves the drive. For anything larger, land at APF and we have the car waiting.
  • Golf bags are the Naples problem. A light jet takes a few; a midsize jet takes a foursome's worth. Tell us the count and we pick the aircraft with the space.

Should I fly into Naples or Fort Myers?

Naples, nearly every time. APF is about 10 minutes from Old Naples and has customs on the field. Fort Myers wins for a heavy jet with full fuel on a hot day, for a late night arrival, and when the Naples ramp is full. We tell you which one when we send the options.

How far ahead should I book for the season?

A week or more for a normal trip from November through April, and two to four weeks for Thanksgiving, Christmas through New Year, Presidents Day, spring break and Easter. Aircraft and ramp parking both sell out in those weeks. From May through October a few days is usually enough.

Can I land at Naples late at night?
